Muhlenbergia rigens
Spreading groundcovers are the most affordable lawn alternative out there. These large yet low-growing plants can quickly fill-in big areas and stand up to heat. From blue-green to gold & soft hues in between these plants thrive in settings were conventional lawn was once growing. As long as soil drainage and fertility is mitigated adequately with a light compost treatment and placement of gravel at the bottoms of planting holes (see exceptions below).
These mounding groundcovers can be planted in groupings for a clean contemporary look or mixed at random for something more wild. Rebate qualifying and best on drip irrigation. Pair with sages, succulents or trees.
Silver Plants spaced @ 3 feet. Sun & Shade Plants spaced @ 4-6 feet. Placing 2" of gravel at the bottom of planting holes is recommended for all soils that aren't naturally sandy, very sloped or significantly rocky.
Consistent irrigation is required for 1st year's establishment and in extended dry seasons thereafter. For a stunning look, sprinkle seasonal wildflower seeds (like california poppies, evening primrose) or medium-height shrubs (like salvia clevelandii or microphylla) in between.
